In order to combine the
analysis of geographic information and link relationships, we developed a tool
called GeoTemporalNet based on the framework called
JSNVA. GeoTemporalNet is composed of two major parts, one part is used to show the
geographical information in the grid on the panel and the other part is used to
show the structure of different networks. JSNVA (Java Straight-line
drawing Network Visual Analysis framework) is a software framework JSNVA for
network visual analysis in different applications. JSNVA has a clear
architecture and supports a more systematic way of implementing different
straight-line graph drawing algorithms which show different networks on
different views. JSNVA can be used as a front-end for visualization and a
back-end for analysis in applications, and it can be customized for different
applications. The paper of more details about JSNVA will be published in
ADMA2008. Based on JSNVA, the data in GeoTemporalNet’s applications are stored in a
graph structure as nodes and edges, and if there are relations between two
nodes there will be an edge. The information in nodes and edges can be stored
and achieved by different keys, such as time,
position, names et al.
In this mini challenge,
we use the undirected graph data structure to record the social relationships
between different contributors. We use the force directed algorithm to layout
the social network. By using GeoTemportalNet, we can
not only show networks but also use different algorithms to analyze the network
based on the basic graph structure in JSNVA. There is a video about the basic
operations of our tool in this mini challenge.

Detailed Answer:
We get the relationships between contributors based on the comments in the Wikipedia’s Paraiso edits page. We try
to detect their relationships by finding the “vandalism
and repair” pattern in the comments by different contributors. In this edits page there are lots of comments having the “vandalism and repair” pattern, and that there are some sentence structures
that can show the relationships between contributors. We focus on 2 kinds of
sentence structures: the first kind is “revert sb1 to sb
After getting the
relationships between contributors, we can get a social network as show in figure 1. In figure 1, the thickness indicates the times of their “support
and against” relationships. We also set a
threshold to test whether the relationships are “against” or “support”. After counting their “support and against”
relationship times, we get the fraction of “against”
relationships. In order to get the “against” relationship more strictly, we
choose the edges whose fractions of “against” are above 0.6 as the “against” relations. In figure 1,
we use the red edges to show the “against” relations and the blue edges to show
the “support” relationships. On closer
inspection we can realize these patterns indicate what the Wikipedia
community called “edit wars”. We can find
that the most controversial contributor may be VictoriaV, as there are a lot strong “against” edges
link to him. His main opponents are Edemir,
Rm99, Agustin, DailosTamanca, Sara et al. We can also get that BakBOT, Edemir, Seina are friends. DailosTamanca, Genoveva and
Mercenario97 are friends, while 82.152.249.x is an opponent to all of them. As
we can find VictoriaV strongly support the Paraiso movement by reading
the discussing page and wiki edits page.

As for "followers
being forced to work without pay" etc., this is not borne out by reputable
sources such as Cuartio, who spent months with
Catalano’s followers, observing daily life first hand, nor I believe by
Guadalupe, who likewise spent considerable time there. Cheers, -- VictoriaV 03:40, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
As far as children are
concerned the forced labour in some Catalano
communities is more than well documented. A neutral account should present all
evidence. (81.96.243.x) (talk) 04:01, 16 February 2007 (UTC))
Every comment related to
his illegal migration activities has been refuted or glossed over. It's a
daunting task to address every sentence, thus why people are complaining about
its lack of neutrality. Agustin (talk) 22:53, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
There also is an
over-abundance of links to Youtube videos produced by
Catalano’s Pirate Radio programs, this is unsavoury.
The controversy surrounding Catalano has been downplayed considerably. There is
no mention of his subjugation of women, no mention of the issues with mandatory
home schooling for girls, and no mention of the consequences of prohibiting
medical services without permission from the “Family Head”. Rm99 (talk) 17:09,

They get kicked out or
locked away if they refuse the males' wishes. I don't know, maybe it's just
obvious to me... Dove 03:50, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Short Answer:
There are a lot of patterns indicate what the Wikipedia community called “edit wars” which means two people or groups edit the Wikipedia page
alternately. There are “Vandalism and repair”
and “Mass deletion” patterns in these comments. The
normal size of this Wikipedia page is about 100,000
bytes. We define a “mass deletion” to be a version that was less 1,000 bytes. There are some impolite words in these comments such as “bull”, “crap”, “cult” etc.
In the Wiki
discussing page, there are some discussions about the "Followers being forced
to work without pay". In the Wiki discussing page and edits page, there are many
discussing about female’s rights. They mentioned that “the females get kicked out
or locked away if they refuse the males' wishes”. So we think the Paraiso movement involved in violent activities and it was controversial.
